Pakistan’s forgotten issues

Letter November 14, 2016
This is insensitive and disappointing

KARACHI: The November 2 crisis was averted, thanks to the timely intervention of the Supreme Court. One would have expected that the government, the opposition and the media would then have belatedly focused on the real problems and tragedies facing the people of this country. The tragic Quetta incident and its investigation, the multiple train wrecks within weeks of each another, the tragic explosion in Gadani and lack of safety measures are just a few recent tragedies. It is almost as if the lives and safety of our citizens don’t matter, particularly if they are poor. Major issues like 24 million children of school going age being out of school, the looming water crisis, and the lack of basic services and health facilities to the bulk of our population never seem to attract the attention of our media, our talk show hosts, our politicians and the establishment.

This is insensitive and disappointing. People are distracted from these real concerns by the never ending political dramas, civil-military issues and power plays, which add no value to the lives of our suffering citizens. When will our leadership learn?
