Gadani incident

Letter November 11, 2016
Demand is to provide five million rupees as compensation to every family that lost a breadwinner in the accident

AWARAN: Gadani is the world’s second largest shipbreaking yard. The yard stretches about 10 kilometres along the coast, where more than 12,000 people work. Recently, some workers breathed their last breath in the line of duty.

Shipbreaking is an unsafe job. Employees are not provided basic security and facilities for which the workers even demonstrated at the Karachi Press Club days before the November 1 accident. Once again, poor workers have been on the road protesting for their fair rights. Their simple demand is that five million rupees be provided as compensation to every family that lost a breadwinner in the accident and one-and-a-half million rupees for each injured worker. They also call for safe working conditions at the shipbreaking yard. The responsible authorities should carefully consider their fair rights and fulfill their demands to prevent such tragedies in future.
