The record can be set straight only through the good offices of the media
LAHORE: A common complaint is that the Mangla and Tarbela dams have reduced flow in the Indus River and that the Kalabagh Dam will do the same, due to which Sindh will become a desert. The fact is, however, that the Mangla and Tarbela dams have increased flow in the canals of Sindh from 35.6 million acre-feet (maf) before Mangla to 44.5 maf after Tarbela. So, too, will be the case with the Kalabagh Dam.
It is misunderstandings like this that are holding up the construction of the much-needed dam. The record can be set straight only through the good offices of the media. The contents of my letter can easily be verified from the respective provincial irrigation departments. There are only a few of us who have the relevant information on this complex subject and our numbers are dwindling. Very soon, there will be no one left to speak up for a project so vital for the teeming millions.
