Gender gap index

Letter November 07, 2016
The state must pass an amended bill to save Pakistan from being listed so low on the gender gap index

TURBAT: Pakistan is getting worse every year on the gender gap list. Gender discrimination is a grim tragedy with the woman presumed the weaker sex in Pakistani society. Women are expected to be submissive and dependent while man is deemed to be active, aggressive and independent, which is why man always dominates the woman. Women are also kept ignorant of their basic human rights, making them vulnerable to oppression.

Such gender prejudices also invite domestic violence, honour killings and other right violations such as over property. Some men make women work like animals and beat her whenever he feels like it, considering it his birthright. Men have also deprived women from their foremost right to education, which is necessary to empower women and make them aware of their rights. The state must pass an amended bill to save Pakistan from being listed so low on the gender gap index and provide protection from the men who limit women.
