Ad hoc judges

Letter February 22, 2011
It seems a bit odd that it should seek the appointment of ad hoc judges.

LAHORE: State institutions such as the armed forces and the branches of the bureaucracy and judiciary are best strengthened when the myth of indispensability of certain individuals is done away with. One is of course relating this to a resolution passed recently by the Supreme Court that sought the appointment of ad hoc judges. At present, the judiciary is one of the freest and most independent institutions of the state and so it seems a bit odd that it should seek the appointment of ad hoc judges. Besides, the court was inquiring into the appointments of bureaucrats on contract, after they had reached their date of retirement, and wanted the government to terminate the services of all such officials.
