Willful accountability

Letter November 04, 2016
Finally, the Supreme Court has opened the case

PESHAWAR: Accountability in Pakistan has never remained a good choice for those at the helm of power. The very words ‘probe’, ‘judicial commission’ and ‘accountability’ frightens them. Political governments consider it a disgrace by subjecting themselves to self-accountability. The previous government, Pakistan Peoples’ Party, even lost its elected prime minister by not adhering to the court orders of probing the Swiss accounts of its co-chairman. The mole came out of the mountain when ultimately, the government proceeded unwillingly with the probe. The then president and prime minister accused were given a clean chit by the Swiss authorities. Thus, the matter was settled forever.

The current government was repeating the same mistake by not listening to the demands of many, which was accountability in the courts. Finally, the Supreme Court has opened the case. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should fearlessly present himself for our much-desired need for his accountability. Maybe, he will come out as a clean and strong man from all the allegations.
