Unrest and peaceful transition

Letter February 21, 2011
Given the current rise in political temperature, one can only hope that our political parties rise to the occasion.

ISLAMABAD: Peaceful transition from one government to another through free, fair and impartial elections is an indispensable component of democracy. If power is not transferred peacefully, violence takes over, as we are witnessing in many parts of the Arab world these days. Pakistan has hardly ever experienced peaceful transition and the consequences of this have been disastrous for the country.

Given the current rise in the political temperature, one can only hope that our political parties rise to the occasion and make preparations for transition through a fair election whenever elections are held. If we don’t do this, we could see the same kind of unrest that is happening in the Arab world.
