The Education Department must try to understand and act on why teachers are not motivated to teach
KARACHI: Recently, I read in the news that the departments of general history, Islamic history, psychology and social work are being closed at a well-known college of Karachi. In this context, I would like to draw the attention of the governor of Sindh, home minister, provincial minister of social work, provincial secretary of education and members of the assembly about the importance of social work.
Our society is going through multiple social problems and there is a great need to continue teaching this subject in all degree colleges of the city. Social and economic injustice is very common and requires the expansion of social work studies. There should neither be excuses for a lack of resources or a shortage of teachers.
The Education Department must try to understand and act on why teachers are not motivated to teach, instead of shutting down important departments. Instead of increasing the number of teaching staff, it has been reduced. The number of students is also rapidly declining. Our society today needs social workers. I request the authorities to allocate adequate financial resources to secure and develop the social work studies department on a top priority basis.
