Closing liquor shops

Letter October 31, 2016
According to the liquor law in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, alcohol is prohibited as is its advertisement

FAISALABAD: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the provincial IG Police and DG Excise Department to shut down all liquor shops in the province. This is a remarkable decision taken by the apex court. There are several short and long-term health effects of alcoholism. Social problems arising from alcoholism are serious.

The risk of committing criminal offences, including abuse, domestic violence, rape, burglary and assault are all associated with alcohol abuse. Driving under the influence, operating an aircraft or heavy machinery increases the risk of accident.

According to the liquor law in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, alcohol is prohibited as is its advertisement.

However, it remains widely available in urban Pakistan through bootleggers and through the diplomatic staff of some minor countries. Sindh is the only province of Pakistan where the Hindu community lives in penalties in the areas of Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar and Badin districts. Approximately 160 liquor shops are operational across Sindh, which have obtained licences in the names of non-Muslims. Interestingly, some liquor shops operating in Muslim-majority areas of Clifton and DHA in Karachi.

The move by SHC was necessary to curb this source of evil from our society. The apex court has set an example to save the nation of whole Pakistan.
