Brazen Quetta attack

Letter October 31, 2016
Those sitting at the helm of affairs should formulate policies to eradicate these causes

DERA MURAD JAMALI: It is useful to understand the terrorists’ objectives so that we can employ a short-term and long-term strategy through which we can weed out terrorism from its roots. The short-term strategy is to launch operations against terrorists at every nook and corner. The onus lies on government to take stern action by launching operations.

Further, the long-term strategy is to eliminate the causes of terrorism which take a long time in execution. The causes of terrorism are widely known to all and sundry, such as poverty, corruption and illiteracy.

Those sitting at the helm of affairs should formulate policies to eradicate these causes. Although implementation takes a long time, it is effective compared with short-term strategies. The issue of terrorism cannot be demolished if this long-term policy is not executed. Short-term strategies merely help overcome the situation; they will not wipe out terrorism. Hence, the need of an hour is to focus on the long-term strategy, which will bring prosperity and peace in Pakistan.
