Families of Davis’s victims

Letter February 19, 2011
The families of these people would have taken the compensation money and American passports.

KARACHI: This is with reference to your report of February 19 titled “Family refused to meet Kerry”. The fact is that armed goons of religious parties are standing guard outside the houses of the victims’ families to pressure them into not accepting a settlement under diyat. I suspect that, had this not been the case, the families of these people would have taken the compensation money and American passports. Also, one question that comes to mind is: How come religious parties are now opposing diyat, when usually murderers and rapists get away with their crimes after forcing the victim’s side to accept compensation money?
