Relocating SBP departments

Letter October 24, 2016
The argument to improve the efficiency of the bank by relocating the headquarters is baseless

GUJRANWALA: Four departments of the State Bank of Pakistan are being shifted from Karachi to Lahore. Such a disruptive measure is injurious to provincial harmony. It is patently clear that such actions will further accentuate the feeling of deprivation in Sindh, kindling perturbation in its business community. The decision is disastrous in effect and perhaps the current federal leadership is incognisant of its harmful effect on the already crumbling economic condition of Pakistan’s economic hub.

Keeping in view the geological importance of the port city and its stupendous economic activity, the aforementioned decision seems ‘accidentally on purpose’ by the PML-N, merely focusing on Punjab. The argument to improve the efficiency of the bank by relocating the headquarters is baseless, as efficiency is improved by human resource and patronisation by the government, not by displacement of the entire institution. Even if Karachi’s law and order situation affects performance, the problem should be rectified, not escaped.
