Frustrated youth

Letter October 10, 2016
Providing a skills-based education and creating jobs is extremely important

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani youth is becoming aggressive and violent by the day because of numerous socio-economic reasons which includes injustice, unemployment, political instability and an unequal education system. We face the tragic consequences of the frustrated youth in the shape of high crime rates, more recruits for militancy and political conflict. The youth, being more adventurous, is willing to take greater risks and if managed poorly, the frustration could end up as a time bomb. Tunisia is a great example of this where the country’s failure to manage its youth led Mohamed Bouazizi, a fruit seller with a college degree, to end his life, which triggered the Arab Spring.

Providing a skills-based education and creating jobs is extremely important, especially to keep pace with population growth. Provision of small business loans to literate and skilled youth would not only benefit them but their business startups would also create new jobs for others. Sports infrastructure should be built to involve the youth in healthy activities. Provision of services like health, education, jobs and involvement in policymaking will enhance the rate of youth welfare in Pakistan. It is time to change our policies and accommodate our youth by providing better opportunities.
