Modern occupational safety and health legislation usually demand that a risk assessment be carried out
FAISALABAD: According to media reports, three workers of a textile factory died while two others were rescued after they fell into a chemical tank in the Bin Qasim Industrial Area in Karachi. This shows that there were no proper safety arrangements for the workers in the factory. Unfortunately, safety and security remain significant issues in the textile sector of Pakistan. There are limited checks on exhaust systems, light systems and waste water disposal. National and international standards and regulations are not being followed and implemented accurately in textile factories.
Modern occupational safety and health legislation usually demand that a risk assessment be carried out prior to making an intervention. There is a dire need to take remedial actions, ranging from independent monitoring of factories and their modernisation.
I urge Minister of Commerce and Textile Industries Khurram Dastgir to ensure sustainable improvement in the safety and working conditions at factories.
