Schools in flood-affected districts

Last year’s floods damaged education infrastructure on a massive scale.

LAHORE: Last year’s floods damaged education infrastructure on a massive scale. Thousands of schools were rendered inaccessible because of the water and the unfortunate thing is that the situation hasn’t really improved. It has now been almost six months but it seems that the government had yet to get its act together.

In Punjab, the provincial government has drawn up a plan to rehabilitate and restore all such schools in flood-affected districts such as Rajanpur, Layyah and Muzaffargarh.

It is essential that schooling be restored in these districts because it is key to the resumption of a normal life for many of the people affected by the floods. Other provinces could follow Punjab’s lead, especially in the provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities in these schools, accompanied by health and hygiene awareness education for both teachers and students.
