Revolution in Egypt

Letter February 12, 2011
Here are poignant lessons from the people of Egypt for all concerned.

ISLAMABAD: Egypt is free, thanks to the freedom fighters gathered at Freedom Square, Cairo, and in streets and city centres around the country. Sacrifices rendered by thousands of protesters have borne fruit. The people of Egypt have shown the way to the rest of the world on how to get rid of oppressive dictators.

Here are poignant lessons from the people of Egypt for all concerned:

America must refrain from supporting dictators in future. All dictators elsewhere in the world should voluntarily give up their powers. Egypt’s generals should try and hijack the revolution and ensure that a free and fair election is held. Pakistan’s rulers should understand that the people of Pakistan can no longer be taken for a ride. As for the latter, they should celebrate what is happening in Egypt. Intellectuals all over the world should understand that while philosophy is all well and good, it should address the problems of ordinary people. And those who serve in the police or other security services, need to realise that the people are their masters and hitting them with batons and throwing tear gas on them will not achieve anything.
