Unprepared for rains

Letter September 01, 2016
People expect the government to perform its due role but the government beats around the bush every time

GUJRANWALA: Daylong downpours inundated some of the most populous cities of Pakistan recently including Lahore, Karachi and Faisalabad. There were reports of houses collapsing with people also losing their loved ones in some cases due to downed powerlines. People who commute across these cities suffer panic and anxiety in the wake of heavy showers. Due to inadequate or nonexistent drainage systems, life comes to a standstill for hours on the road as people rush to get to their homes.

People expect the government to perform its due role but the government beats around the bush every time and tries to evade responsibility often blaming meagre resources for this state of affairs. I urge local municipalities to expedite their rescue missions to protect human lives and ensure smooth flow of traffic in their respective cities. In order to meet the seasonal challenges, local governments should plan well in advance.
