Oppressive customs

Letter August 25, 2016
Only social reforms can help eradicate such vicious traditions

SIALKOT: The suppression of women’s free expression and will is pervasively prevalent in our so-called free and safe society for women. Women in Pakistan often do not enjoy the right to choose their own life partners, and more often than not, are urged to accept their parents’ chosen life partner. Therefore, there is often a clash within families about marital decisions. Women’s freedom of choice is sometimes exploited by parents. To make matters worse, society generally stands with parents and leaves young women defenceless. When women try to take charge of their own life decisions, they are considered rebels.

There is a need to root out societal practices that act as fetters for women’s rights. Only social reforms can help eradicate such vicious traditions.
