Fridays of mercy

Letter August 21, 2016
The Pope offers humane hearing to their sufferings and blesses them with good wishes

PESHAWAR: It is good to know that Pope Francis has initiated unscheduled visits once a month on Fridays to many public places as an act of mercy, where he listens to people’s grievances. So far, he has visited a home for the elderly, a community for drug addicts, a refugee centre, asylum seekers, sick children, victims of the Holocaust and rescued sex slaves. The Pope offers humane hearing to their sufferings and blesses them with good wishes.

Our rulers should also spare some time for the downtrodden in society to learn about their suffering. Be it hospitals, police stations, courts, or other public or private places, poor people are subjected to appalling treatment. The prime minister, chief ministers, and governors should pay surprise visits to public places to take stock of people’s problems and tell the authorities concerned to take immediate measures for the improvement of their lives.
