I urge the government to pay attention to this city of 25 million
KARACHI: I am a Karachiite who at times feels very proud that the city in which I live is contributing a significantly towards the economic stability of Pakistan and is a place where people from all over the country come to transform their lives. At the same time, I am very upset when I see the attitude of the provincial and federal governments towards this city. A few years back, Karachi had major security issues. Now, these have been doused. However, no one is paying attention to the many other problems that remain.
I get upset when I see smaller cities getting a major transport scheme, while Karachi doesn’t. I get upset when I look at the garbage collection system of other cities and compare it with Karachi’s ‘system’ — or lack thereof. It saddens me to see policemen from different cities of Pakistan come to Karachi to make money by extorting local residents. The water shortage and sewerage problems only add to my agony.
No one is paying attention to these issues; Karachi is an ignored city and has turned into everyone’s dumping ground. I urge the government to pay attention to this city of 25 million.
