Where are local govts?

Letter August 07, 2016
Let us prepare ourselves to face the harsh conditions of the city until this drama ends

KARACHI: The formation of the local government in Sindh seems to be a dilemma. More than 10 months have passed since the local bodies’ election but no changes have taken place. When will local government bodies take oath? When will they start work? Will they even come into existence or not? The stressful situation among between various political parties in Sindh is making the formation of local governments a hard nut to crack. It is difficult to understand what role the Sindh government is playing in all of this because after the 18th Amendment, the local government is a provincial subject. The problems of Karachi, especially with regard to water and sewerage, solid waste disposal and road infrastructure, are so severe that at this point, it might even require rocket science to resolve them. It seems that no one is the waali waris of the issues of the metropolis. The Sindh government has totally failed to give the rights of local government to locally elected people. Let us prepare ourselves to face the harsh conditions of the city until this drama ends.
