Sindh Child Protection Authority

Letter August 07, 2016
The cases of violation of child rights in Sindh are on the rise

PESHAWAR: This is with reference to the article, “Bilawal must live up to commitments” by Arshad Mahmood (July 29). The writer tried his best to remind the PPP leadership of the commitments made by the party in the general election of 2013. The way of blending politics with human rights with solid recommendations is really appreciable and needs to be an area of focus.

While keeping in view the recommendations in the said article, I would like to draw the attention to the point that the Sindh government had formed the Child Protection Authority back in 2011 through legislation in the assembly; however, it is yet to work. While the cases of violation of child rights in Sindh are on the rise and implementing the authority in letter and in spirit is the need of the hour to improve the child rights situation in the province, the implementation of this Act has a need of financial and human resources, along with capacity-building of relevant stakeholders, awareness-raising and effective interdepartmental coordination.

The implementation of the Child Protection Authority Act in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child needs the political will of the ruling party in Sindh. The hope is that the change in leadership, with a newly appointed chief minister, will definitely follow the recommendations, keeping in view the aim to protect children from all kinds of abuse and exploitation in the province.
