Kidnappings raise questions

Letter July 23, 2016
The kidnapping raises questions on the overall security situation in the country

ISLAMABAD: Awais Ali Shah, son of the chief justice of the Sindh High Court, has recently been recovered from Tank. The credit went to an operation carried out by the forces to recover him. This was another task achieved in a high-profile case of kidnapping solved by the forces.

Earlier this year, Shahbaz Taseer, son of slain Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, was rescued four years after he was kidnapped by militants in Lahore. Last month, US and Afghan forces also rescued Ali Haider Gilani, son of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, three years after gunmen abducted him.

It is a consoling moment for the CJ’s family but we ought not to forget that where he was kidnapped and from where he is recovered. Like many other unsolved mysteries, it also raises questions on the overall security situation in the country. How were the terrorists able to travel from Karachi till Tank without being discovered earlier? How were they able to get that far? Why is it that terrorists are able to carry out such extreme criminal acts in the first place? It seems that we only think of the preventive measures that should have been taken after the tragedy has occurred.
