The absence of safety standards in workplaces

Letter July 22, 2016
The owner is responsible for not following safety precautions and should be penalised

SIALKOT: Given the customs of administrative blindness when it comes to healthy and safe working conditions, the incidences of noncompliance with international safety laws are not new.

While adults are exploited, young children are as well, despite there being international laws against child labour. Following international health and occupational safety standards is not something Pakistani business owners care about. I visited a small gas welding shop in Daska, Sialkot, and saw a child assisting his autocratic shop owner. The child’s clothes were ragged, he took in fumes from the combustion flame, and worked without goggles.

The owner is responsible for not following safety precautions and should be penalised. Those who are responsible for ensuring safety measures should be questioned.
