India’s growing pains

Letter February 04, 2011
Now the economics: Indians are not fools.

LONDON: Khurram Husain’s article “India’s growing pains” (February 4) was brilliant — and I am an Indian! First of all, let me quote Mr Husain: “[M]y Indian hosts, warm and hospitable and gracious all of them”. Sir, forget the economics, let me congratulate you on being honest about the welcome you received and the nice people you met in India. More of this mutual affection and the hatred amongst the terror merchants of Pakistan will diminish.

Now the economics. Indians are not fools. Grudge them not the exhilaration of having achieved a lot in the last 20 years and let them, us, like excited children, share their joy with the world. But open any newspaper, Hindi or English, and one will find articles from eminent journalists who are constantly criticising the government for its policy failures and reminding it, and the chattering classes, that India is still beset with massive problems. I look to reading more of such articles in this newspaper.
