Edhi spent his life serving those who were unable to help themselves
KARACHI: Abdul Sattar Edhi, the great hero of Pakistan, passed away on Friday night. His death is an irreparable loss for the country. Celebrated as the angel of mercy, Edhi was a world-renowned philanthropist, social activist and humanitarian. He was the most respected figure of Pakistan. He spent his life serving those who were unable to help themselves. He created maternity wards, orphanages, shelter homes and homes for the elderly. He was the richest poor man of Pakistan. Edhi was a man of character — an attribute he exhibited when an Indian premier offered him a hefty amount for his foundation as a token of appreciation for the return of Geeta, a blind and deaf Indian girl who lived in the Edhi Foundation; Edhi politely refused the offer.
Edhi also declined numerous government offers for his treatment abroad and throughout his life preferred local hospitals for treatment. He was nominated several times for the Nobel peace prize but never won — makes me think, who could be more deserving and worthy than him? I pray that his vision is kept alive without any political motivations.
