Hypocrisy?

Letter July 05, 2016
Islam does not teach us to use foul language

FAISALABAD: Using profanity and abusive language are not appropriate behaviour for any civilised society. In fact, in some parts of the world charges can be brought against the offenders. There is no place for profanity in any religion, either. In countries where it is illegal to broadcast profanity on radio or television, such as the US, programmes can be pre-recorded or a broadcast delay device is used to screen for, and possibly delete profanity before it is broadcast. Songs have to be cleared for profanity before they are broadcast on radio.

Unfortunately, the free use of abusive language by the religious right wing in our country has become a routine affair. We lack character and one can argue that it is, indeed, the job of clergymen to build the character of the nation, especially when they lay claim to have laid the foundations of the country.

Why are our prominent religious parties silent when people from among the religious right wing can be seen to behave shamefully? Islam does not teach us to use foul language. There is a dire need for religious organisations to come forward and take serious notice of the elements that are inflicting a bad name on them.
