Brexit and democracy

Letter July 04, 2016
Brexit has turned out to be a Pandora’s box for the UK

LAHORE: Brexit is making headlines across global politics. Where the referendum to leave European Union (EU) has not only uncovered the fragile relationship between the super state and its disgruntled members, because of the authoritarian approach being applied by Germany and the rise of the right wing in the face of immigration there, it has also pitted the UK against the challenge of how to cope with a divided electorate over a critical issue in a democratic way.

Brexit has turned out to be a Pandora’s box for the UK as it has reignited demand for an independent Scotland. A major chunk of the Scottish electorate voted to remain in the EU, and now, when the collective vote came out to be the complete opposite, the ruling party over there, the Scottish National Party, whose mandate is based upon the independence of Scotland from the UK, has been clamouring for remaining in the EU. It has again started calling for holding a referendum to decide the question for independence for Scotland. At present, the UK’s existence in its current form is at stake. With all eyes set on the UK, let’s see how the epicentre of democracy responds to the dilemma that a democratic choice of the people has thrown up.
