The victory of Sadiq Khan as mayor of London is a good example
KARACHI: The Orlando mass shooting, the worst in US history, has claimed 50 lives. It has increased xenophobia in the US. Politically, it is a godsend opportunity for Donald Trump. He wasted no time and came up with the rhetoric that Muslims are a threat to American society. Unsurprisingly, this went well with the conservative strata of the US. Leaders, like Trump easily exploit fears of the people. Resultantly, the acts of an individual are seen to represent an entire community.
After every such incident, members of the Muslim community are stigmatised as terrorists and their lives have become very difficult. If Trump wins the election under the pretext of fear, it will certainly be a big blow — not only to Muslims but also to the liberal and progressive people of the US. Fear should not win over hope. The victory of Sadiq Khan as mayor of London is a good example. Hope must win.
