Copying fashion

Letter February 01, 2011
Soon it seems every village and town will have a fashion week of its own.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Hani Taha’s article of January 28 titled “Islamabad’s fashion ‘weak’ fails to impress”. A fashion week in Islamabad sounds as real as Karachi being called the ‘city of lights’ given its extensive power cuts. To have a fashion week, a city has to have a fashion scene which is vibrant and which has indigenous designers and a supporting industry. One cannot have a fashion week with two copy designers, and the rest being bored, neglected housewives opening boutiques in their homes. The way things are going Pakistan will soon become the graveyard of the phenomenon called ‘Fashion Week’. True to Pakistani fashion, we import an idea and trivialise it by just imitating and repeating it ad nauseam.

Soon it seems every village and town will have a fashion week of its own.
