Sad reality

Letter June 11, 2016
The present PML-N government appears to have many misogynists in its ranks, including ministers of the federal cabinet

ISLAMABAD: These are the worst of times for womenfolk in Pakistani society. There’s so much hype surrounding women issues but nothing practical — except for some cosmetic measures — has been done for the overall welfare of women in Pakistan. One can quote countless bitter truths regarding the suffering and sorrows of women, both urban and rural. When it comes to women’s rights, promoting active women participation in socio-economic life and inspiring a culture of respect for womenfolk, our rulers are fickle, fanatical and misogynists. The present PML-N government appears to have many misogynists in its ranks, including ministers of the federal cabinet. A statement that was in bad taste was uttered recently in the august lower house of parliament against a female parliamentarian was completely in conflict with decency, decorum and ethics of politics.

We all must, irrespective of our ideological, political and sectarian affinities and affiliations, realise that the defence minister must repent for the unpleasantness he has caused. He should feel shame and should not repeat such bad language in the National Assembly or anywhere else. We need to make some hard decisions in order to create a clean and ethical society. We need to work towards ensuring respect for women in society and actualise women’s rights as enshrined in the Constitution.
