On the subject of corruption

Letter May 21, 2016
Today, majority of Pakistani youth opt for private jobs because of attractive salary packages

NEW YORK, USA: With great power comes great responsibility. Apparently, the bureaucracy of Pakistan is one of the most powerful institutions of our country. It carries great responsibilities and is supposed to be eminently competitive and qualified for governing the country. However, in reality, it is infamous for its corruption.

I, as a layperson, will not put all the blame for this state of affairs on the bureaucracy. Legislators and the government are equally responsible and guilty on this count. Why don’t we shed some light on the Islamabad Traffic Police? They recently received a good raise in their salaries. In the wake of the pay raise, we clearly observe an improvement in their sincerity and integrity towards their duties, indicating that if our government servants receive salaries that help them meet their needs, the level of corruption in government departments can be brought down.

Today, the majority of Pakistani youth opt for private jobs. Why? Mainly because of the attractive salary packages these offer. I would reiterate that if our civil service offers such salary packages, our country would see competent and honest officers joining government service. This will lead to an increase in the efficacy of the bureaucracy.
