Rainwater harvesting can help irrigate more land, provide drinking water and increase incomes of subsistence farmers
CHAKWAL: Rainwater harvesting is an easy and successful way to collect water during the rainy season and store it for use during the dry season. Farmers in my village are watering their lands and combating weather vagaries through rainwater harvesting using small dams. Mini reservoirs and rainwater harvesting techniques can help Pakistan increase its water storage capacity from 30 days to the international standard of 120 days. This can also help raise the groundwater table.
Rainwater harvesting methods can help irrigate more land, provide drinking water and increase incomes of subsistence farmers. They can also prove to be a better adaptation strategy in the face of climate change if farmers are trained in using drip and sprinkle irrigation techniques to conserve water.
