Can PIA be saved?

Letter May 14, 2016
Any organisation would have met the same fate as PIA if its human resource department was polluted by cronyism

LAHORE: The appointment of Azam Saigol, from the reputed family of the late Rafique Saigol, can be expected to restore PIA from the abyss that it has fallen into because of political interference and massive corruption by mediocrities that dominated its executive corridors for the past two decades. It is claimed that Mr Saigol is given a free hand with no political interference. Any organisation would have met the same fate as PIA if its human resource department was polluted by cronyism. Every government went overboard to deny the national airline its fair share in traffic rights and placed it at a disadvantage with undue patronage of Gulf-based airlines getting unlimited access to northern hubs, which generates 80 per cent of aviation traffic.

Unless PIA is rid of over 3,000 fake degree holders, ghost workers and others involved in financial and administrative irregularities, it cannot be expected to regain even a semblance of the past glory. Without a team of qualified professionals with integrity and strict adherence to merit for promotions and foreign postings, the current team may not be able to deliver.
