Living in their own world

Letter January 27, 2011
The liberals in Pakistan live in a world of their own; they cannot see the poverty and the squalor of the people.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Shahzad Chaudhry’s article of January 26 titled “Elite attitudes, common reactions”. It seems the writer thinks that the divide in our society is between those who drive SUVs (sports utility vehicles) and those who drive Suzukis. This means he does not, or cannot, see the millions and millions of Pakistanis for whom even a Suzuki is a luxury. There are millions in this country who cannot even afford a motorcycle or a cycle and for them travelling on a bus takes up a major share of their income.

The liberals in Pakistan live in a world of their own; they cannot see the poverty and the squalor of the people for whom they claim to speak, yet they have the nerve to talk about a revolution.
