Confused about the colonel

Letter January 27, 2011
Anyone can do anything and claim that it is good for the country and should get a pat on the back for his dedication!

LONDON: This is with reference to Asad Munir’s article of January 26 titled “The death of Colonel Imam”. The Taliban kill our soldiers, officers, Rangers, FC jawans, policemen and innocent civilians and those who die are called ‘shaheed’. Then the person who played a pivotal role in training the Taliban garners so much sympathy because of his commitment to a policy and belief (which ends up in the killing of the above-mentioned groups of individuals) he is also praised and it is said that may he rest in peace. Surely something is wrong with this logic?

Also, may I ask the writer what exactly does “fully committed and dedicated to the cause, which in his opinion, was good for his country” mean? By that standard, anyone can do anything and claim that it is good for the country and should get a pat on the back for his dedication!
