Land of intolerance

Letter January 26, 2011
I would say that the ban on Slackistan is part of the growing lack of tolerance that is engulfing Pakistan.

KARACHI: This is with reference to your report of January 26 titled “Slackistan banned in Pakistan”. I read the report while sitting in my room and as I did that, I could hear a man speak on the microphone in the street outside my home, addressing a small crowd of what must have been some kind of religious gathering. He was saying that anyone who committed blasphemy against the Holy Prophet (pbuh) deserved to be killed, and that America was conspiring against Islam in Palestine, Kashmir, Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that people should involve themselves in jihad against the Americans and that our government is hand in glove with the Americans.

I would say that the ban on Slackistan is part of the growing lack of tolerance that is engulfing Pakistan. The darkness is fast closing in on us: not only from the cleric’s hate-spewing microphone but also from the cold conservative censor board.
