Steel mill woes

Letter April 28, 2016
The PM should curb corruption within the PSM and avoid privatising it for the sake of the families of 16,000 employees

KARACHI: In an ideal world, the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) would be the backbone of our economy and was at one point in time, a profitable entity. In has been witnessing a steady decline since 2008.

Now employees have not received their salaries for the past five months. They have a burden upon their shoulders as they have to pay school fees of their children and meet other home expenses. The Senate has been informed that the government is planning to privatise the PSM. This is heart-wrenching news for the employees. I request the prime minister to take steps necessary to curb the corruption within the PSM and avoid privatising it for the sake of the families of 16,000 employees.
