Beyond reasonable celebrations

Letter April 22, 2016
Punjab Assembly has recently passed a remarkable law governing wedding functions

FAISALABAD: Like the Women Protection Bill, the Punjab Assembly has recently passed a remarkable law governing wedding functions, disallowing unreasonable illumination, fireworks and dowry and being a nuisance to neighbours “beyond reasonable celebrations”.

The lawmakers in the Punjab Assembly are appreciated for passing this historic bill against the curse of dowry and other social evils. At over 2,000 dowry-related deaths a year, Pakistan has the highest reported number of dowry death rates per 100,000 women in the world.

The excessive use of lighting at weddings has become a fashion in our country where we are facing an energy crisis. We can easily save that energy by banning or at least limiting this practice.

Many casualties have been caused at wedding ceremonies due to the display of fireworks, and jubilation firing. A law that bans such practices is admirable and healthy for society.
