Tackling the issue of child marriage

Letter April 14, 2016
One cannot help but wonder why society and the government are silent over this evil practice

KARACHI: The practice of child marriage in Pakistan is common in the rural areas. It deeply affects the education and health of young children. Parents have been known to force young girls into marriage, hoping that they will rid themselves of the financial burden of raising them. When girls of young and tender age conceive, it can lead to a lot of health complications. It is not safe for them to be mothers when they themselves are so young.

One cannot help but wonder why society and the government are silent over this evil practice. Our country has one of the highest rates of child marriages. It is my humble request to those responsible for  child rights in the country, the prime minister of Pakistan as well as others who have authority, to take strong action against the practice of child marriage to save the future of our youth.
