Panama Leaks or ‘hypocrisy leaks’?

Letter April 09, 2016
As a citizen of Pakistan I want a free and fair investigation of all politicians named in Panama Papers

LAHORE: The leakage of 11.5 million documents titled, the ‘Panama Leaks’ from a previously silent company, Mossack Fonseca, has revealed that the rich elite all over the world, including the ruling family in our country, can go down to the worst levels of hypocrisy in protecting their illegal money.

Many sources provide evidence about the capital invested in setting up these offshore companies coming through illegal means of money laundering, tax evasion, drug deals and other heinous crimes. This shows a big difference between what these hypocrites say and what they do. Massive protests and investigations have started in other countries but in Pakistan, accountability is a mission impossible, especially when it comes to the ruling status quo.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced the formation of a judicial commission led by a former judge of the Supreme Court but such a weak, influenced and rejected commission is just a mere eyewash.

As a citizen of Pakistan I want a free and fair investigation of all named politicians’ wealth, including the Sharif family, because as a democrat, it is my right to know about their legal and illegal investments.

I also urge state institutions like NAB and the FBR to come forward and initiate a probe against all culprits involved in this scandal, as accountability is the real beauty of a democratic society.
