It is our negativism regarding the only mega dam that can be built, which is holding up job creation and development
LAHORE: Hashim Abro in his letter ‘Brand new cars’ has implied that if we are a developing nation where millions of people live in extreme poverty, why do our rulers and their likes spend money on status symbols like expensive hand bags, expensive wrist watches, brand new cars, etc.
Even if these people stop purchasing these things, the poor will remain poor, the real reason for their poverty being their joblessness, due to the decline of industry and agriculture — the two sectors of the economy that can actually provide jobs to the poor. Industry needs mega quantities of power for its revival; agriculture needs mega quantities of water for its growth; quantities which only a mega dam can provide. It is our negativism regarding the only mega dam that can be built in a reasonable period of time, which is holding up job creation, as well as bringing to a halt all development in the country.
