Let’s plant trees

Letter April 02, 2016
With a population of 182 million people, planting 100 million trees should not be such a difficult task

KARACHI: Last year, several thousands of human lives were wasted due to the massive heatwaves in Karachi and other cities of Pakistan. Are we ready for another loss of approximately 2,000 fellow citizens, not to mention the threat to wildlife as well?

There are many people talking about climate change, but conversations and confrontations have never changed anything. We need to remove the tables and take actions. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government highlighted this issue in their provincial cabinet last month.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave the approval of planting 100 million trees and called it the Green Pakistan Programme. It is a positive initiative and must be fortified — we must contribute to the plantation process. With a population of 182 million people, this should not be such a difficult task.

Climate change is a global issue. Let’s not take it for granted. I would like to request our fellow citizens of Karachi and all other cities and villages to simply plant a tree in their own house. One day, this effort will eradicate the heatwaves from our country.
