KARACHI: This is with regard to your report of January 21 titled “Cutting costs: KESC workers bite the hand that gave the golden handshake”.
The KESC is a private entity now, and hence it has the right to fire its staff in order to make itself profitable. One may not entirely agree with their methods, but sacking inefficient workers in such large numbers was, in fact, a bold step. I would say that public-sector organisations need to emulate the KESC’s example since it is a loss to taxpayers if workers who are inefficient and do not perform are kept on the payroll.
As for those who have been laid off, burning cars and damaging property is not the way to express their anger. If they feel that they have been wrongly dismissed, they should protest peacefully or approach the courts.
