Who will hold the police accountable?

Letter January 20, 2011
I personally know some of the victims who were threatened with arrest and only released after they bribed policemen.

KARACHI: The Sindh government has once again imposed a ban on pillion riding for seven days. This announcement was made after 11 pm on January 16, which was a Sunday night. By that time, it would be safe to assume, most people would have gone to sleep. Also, initially, the media had announced that the ban would be from 9 pm to 5 am.

The result was that most people were simply caught unawares. More than 600 of them were arrested by the Sindh police the next morning for violating the ban. I personally know some of the victims who were threatened with arrest and only released after they bribed the policemen who had arrested them. On the one hand, our police have miserably failed to maintain law and order in the city and on the other, they are arresting innocent citizens. Who will hold the police accountable for their misdeeds?
