White elephants

Letter January 20, 2011
Like all previous governments, this government will also fail to take effective measures for anti-corruption.

ISLAMABAD: Moin Fudda's article of January 19 titled "White elephants" rightly refers to state-owned enterprises as a major drain on the country's budget, since they devour public resources without any remorse or compunction. However, his pious hope that the way for their privatisation would be paved within the next six months will bring him great disappointment, because, like all previous governments, this government will also fail to take effective measures for anti-corruption, improve transparency, reduce its expenditure and appoint competent boards of directors and professional managers.

My knowledge and experience gained as secretary privatisation leads me to the conclusion that no political government will ever implement the agenda for the privatisation of these white elephants, until they bleed and die their natural death, whereafter their bones will be auctioned at throwaway prices.
