Rain and reckless driving

Letter March 17, 2016
I fail to understand why residents of Islamabad drive like complete maniacs the minute it starts pouring

ISLAMABAD: I am writing this letter with reference to the persistent rains in Islamabad that began pouring during the wee hours of March 10. What forced me to write this piece was the agonising drive I made that day in order to pick up my child from school. During regular days, Islamabad traffic is calm and somewhat disciplined. That is why I fail to understand why residents of Islamabad drive like complete maniacs the minute it starts pouring.

The honking increases manifold and, rash and reckless drivers become menaces on the already wet and slippery roads. To make matters worse, all traffic lights turn off and chaos pursues amidst the constant downpour. The whole situation turns dangerous. I witnessed two incidents on Nazimuddin Road that day with knocked up cars and disoriented drivers. All in all, I don’t know whether it’s the hurry to reach destinations or that the residents simply lose their minds when it rains, but this attitude clearly needs to be changed so as to mitigate harm to human life.
