Edhi and Pan Am Flight 73

Letter March 01, 2016
The organisation that looked after the injured during Pan Am Flight's hijacking was of our very own Abdul Sattar Edhi

KARACHI: Recently, a Bollywood film, Neerja, featuring the events of the hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in 1986, in Karachi, was released. Highlighting the bravery shown by the flight purser, the movie depicts the events leading to the eventual showdown and around 20 innocent souls losing their lives. Later on, while surfing the internet, I was proud to read that the organisation that was instrumental in caring for the injured and the dead was of our very own Abdul Sattar Edhi. He stood by with a team of 64 ambulances during the massacre and his team dodged bullets to pick up fatalities. It is said that Mr Edhi himself carried the remains of Indian airhostess Ms Neerja Bhanot, who was believed to be contributory in the rescue of remaining lives.
