Telemarketing

Letter February 18, 2016
The authorities concerned are requested to take action against fraudulent telemarketers

KARACHI: Receiving prank phone calls on mobile phones has become increasingly common, with callers offering lavish prizes that are seemingly too good to be true. The callers portray themselves as personnel of mobile phone companies. These tricksters then operate by asking for money to be sent to a certain location, under the guise of shipping charges or taxes. Several people have been duped in this manner and many have actually lost their hard-earned money. Even though the practice has been going on for years now, it appears that little action has been taken against the prank callers even after complaints have been sent to the police, leading one to believe that there is no law against the activity and if there is, there is zero implementation.

The authorities concerned are requested that such fraudulent elements are taken to task. Furthermore, awareness needs to be created among people as to what their consumer protection rights are.
