Managing the youth

Letter February 15, 2016
Our youth needs counseling and our communities need to be strengthened so that they can take care of our young people

ISLAMABAD: The revelations of the Intelligence Bureau chief that hundreds of people are joining the Islamic State (IS) are cause for alarm for the peaceful and law-abiding citizens of Pakistan. The law-enforcement agencies should certainly be drawing up a comprehensive plan to counter such a threat.

How to prevent the youth from engaging in crime also brings up the question as to how one can channel their energies towards more productive activities and causes. Our youth needs counseling and our communities need to be strengthened so that they can take care of our young people. We now have in place the local government system across the country. We must make the system more resourceful, down to the union council level, enough to create job opportunities, encourage volunteerism and, most importantly, patronise sports. It is the helplessness of the people that makes them alienated and this is something that militant groups understand but not our decision-makers.
